- Skillet Caramel Apple Crisp
Why we love this recipe ❤️
Is there anything more wonderfully, deliciously autumn-like than a bowl of scrumptious apple crisp, full of cinnamon and brown sugar and sweet buttery apples?
I knew I wanted to come up with a simple version of this classic fall treat (honestly, the hardest part is peeling the apples) but I also wanted to jazz it up a little.
Which meant caramel sauce. I am a big fan of the Stonewall Kitchen salted caramel version, but by the time I figured this out I had to use what I could find at my local market…and I have to tell you, Mrs. Richardson DELIVERED.

It was just what I was hoping for to put this classic apple dessert over the top! Well, that and a generous dollop of whipped cream, because why not?
All of this deliciousness cooks up in a skillet, although it is also perfectly happy in your favorite casserole. Let’s make it!
What is an apple crisp? 🍎
So many apple desserts to love on! And it’s all about the topping.
An apple crisp has soft spiced apples on the bottom and a crumbly streusel that usually includes oatmeal and brown sugar.
An apple cobbler tops those apples with a sweet biscuit topping.
And an Apple Brown Betty mixes the apples with sweet buttery cubes of bread.
Now that we have that sorted, let’s make an apple crisp!
Ingredients you need 🍅

Ingredient notes and substitutions 📝
- Apples: You can use any kind you like, or a mixture. We like to use a combo of sweeter apples (like Fuji or Gala) with tarter apples (like Granny Smith) but any apples will work.
- Caramel Sauce: Look for this luscious sauce near the ice cream, usually at the end of that frozen food aisle.
- Oatmeal: Regular rolled oats are what you need – look for them in the breakfast aisle (and then make this apple pie oatmeal for breakfast!)

How to make this recipe 👩🏻🍳
STEP 1: Preheat your oven to 350.

STEP 2: Peel and core your apples and cut them into roughly one inch pieces.

STEP 3: Put the apple slices along with the lemon juice, the cinnamon, the allspice and the cloves in a mixing bowl and toss them to combine everything up.

STEP 4: Pour in ½ cup of the caramel sauce and give it another stir to coat. Transfer the apple filling into a 10 inch oven safe skillet (you KNOW I love my cast iron skillet for this one!), spreading it all the way to the edge of the skillet.

STEP 5: Now for the topping! Put the flour, oats, and brown sugar into a mixing bowl, give it a stir until it is all mixed up, and then add the softened butter. With clean hands, smoosh and mix the butter into the oat mixture until it is crumbly.

STEP 6: Sprinkle the topping over your apple mixture.

STEP 7: Pop it into the oven and bake it up until the topping is golden and you can see some bubbling along the edges, about 40 minutes

STEP 8: Let it cool for about 10-15 minutes, divide it among bowls and top with a little more caramel (and I wouldn’t say no to some whipped cream and/or some ice cream.
The last time I made this scrumptious apple dessert, this is what my skillet looked like approximately 30 seconds after I brought it to the table…

I call that apple crisp success! 💯💯💯
Recipe FAQs 🧐
I know, this is the hardest part, and no, you don’t have to. If you leave the peel on just know that there will be a little more of a rustic texture, and the apples will be a little firmer. I like the softer consistency of peeled apples, but you do you!
I know there are all kinds of apple peeling gizmos out there, but here’s my method! Slice off the top and the bottom of the apple (these make good snacks while you are peeling). Now peel your apple with a vegetable peeler using a little criss-cross motion. You can either go up and down the apple (best for big apples) or peel in a circle all the way around (best for smaller apples. When you are done, you can use an apple slicer to core the apples before you cut them into small pieces.
It can! You can make it up to a day ahead. Store it covered in the fridge and let the crisp come to room temperature before you serve it. You can also pop it into a 200 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes to heat it up if you like.
