Why we love this recipe ❤️
The Southern husband and I are great lovers of oatmeal for dinner. Warm and wonderful, quick and filling, and when we have it for supper we usually jazz it up in a savory way instead of going sweet – our favorite is with some cheddar cheese and a soft-cooked egg.
But sometimes you want to have that sweet vibe going, so I decided the only thing left to so was do was go straight for the dessert-meets-dinner with an apple pie version of oatmeal.
Which by the way would be perfectly perfect for breakfast and lunch, too!
What are steel cut oats? 🥣
Steel cut oats are whole oat grains that have been chopped into small pieces using (yep!) steel blades, as opposed to being rolled or ground. Chopping the oats into bits gives them a much chewier and heartier texture than rolled or instant oats.
Steel cut oats take longer to cook, usually about 30 minutes on the stove (you can also cook steel cut oats overnight in your slow cooker so breakfast is ready in the morning when you wake up!) And bonus points: steel cut oats are high in fiber, especially that excellent soluble fiber that helps lower cholesterol. 💪🏻

- Steel Cut Oats: Look for these hearty oats in the breakfast aisle of your supermarket right next to their rolled oats cousins.
- Apples: You can use any type of apples you like!
- Cream: A drizzle of cream is optional but oh so good! And yes, you can swap in a drizzle of milk if you prefer.

How to make this recipe 👩🏻🍳

STEP 1: Bring water to a simmer in a medium pot. Add oats and cook over medium-low heat for 20 minutes. Add more water as needed if the oatmeal absorbs all of it before the cooking time is done.

STEP 2: Add apples and cinnamon sugar and stir. Simmer for another 10 minutes until oatmeal is done, drizzling in more water if needed. Steel cut oatmeal will be slightly chewy – that’s how it’s supposed to be.

STEP 3: Let it cool for about 5 minutes. Ladle into warmed bowls, drizzle with a little maple syrup and heavy cream and serve.
There’s nothing like apple pie oatmeal to make you clean your plate. Or your bowl.

Here’s the thing: rolled oats take about 5 minutes to cook (and instant is instant 💨) and the apples need a good 10 minutes to get to that nice soft apple pie consistency. So no, but I promise it will be worth the time!
You can usually find cinnamon sugar in the spice aisle. Or you can make it yourself in a jiffy – mix a quarter cup of regular granulated sugar with a teaspoon of cinnamon and there you go!
