🌟 Why this recipe works
This is a super simple no-bake cake that features fluffy angel food cake and a rich chocolate Heath Bar whipped frosting. It’s designed to deliver maximum “birthday cake” vibes!
It would be impossible to keep count of all time times this Heath Bar Cake has been whipped up in our house, not only for birthdays but also for holidays and parties of all kinds.
And sometimes just because someone has a sudden and urgent need for a light and lovely angel food cake frosted with a decadent creamy frosting filled with crushed bits of Heath bars, which are toffee candy bars covered in chocolate (and you can also get them in packages of baking bits, too).
You can of course make the angel food cake from scratch, but whenever I’m the one making it I go for the pre-made angel food cake from the market, and spend my time making the delectable frosting.
Which means this cake is all of five ingredients, with no baking and maximum dramatic creamy Heath Bar deliciousness.
PRO TIP: While this cake is ALL kinds of easy, it does need to be started a day ahead so the frosting has time to chill down. 🥶 So make sure you work that timing into your plans.
And with that, let’s make it!
🤔 What are Heath Bars?
Heath bars are a candy bar that features a crunchy, buttery English toffee center covered with a thin layer of milk chocolate.
They come in standard candy bar size, mini candy bars, and you can also sometimes find Heath Bar bits in the baking aisle, which will save you the step of breaking them up for this frosting!
🍫 Ingredients you need

📝 Ingredient notes
- Angel Food Cake: Look for this light and sugary cake in the bakery section of your supermarket.
- Heath Bars: You can use regular or mini Heath bars (you will need to crush them up into bits) or you can use Heath bar bits, which are in the baking aisle near the chocolate chips.
- Cocoa Powder: Look for this unsweetened chocolate powder in the baking aisle.

STEP 1: Combine some heavy cream, unsweetened cocoa powder and powdered sugar in a bowl, give it a good stir and refrigerate it overnight.

STEP 2: Take your angel food cake and cut it horizontally so you have three layers. A long serrated knife works straight for this if you have one.

STEP 3: Whip your chilled cream mixture in a mixer until soft peaks form. Gently stir in your crushed Heath bars.

STEP 4: Place the cake on your serving dish. Spread the frosting in between the layers and then all around the sides and the top of the cake. Chill for at least two hours before serving.
Happy Whatever You Are Celebrating! 🥳
🤔 Recipe FAQs
Angel food cake keeps this dessert light and airy, but if you want a richer dessert you can use pound cake or even brownies (cut them into three long rectangles). You can also use chocolate pound cake if you can find it!
There are various kinds of toffee bars (Skor is a good one) that will also work. You could also swap the Heath bar bits for mini chocolate chips, crushed Butterfinger bars, mini M&Ms or crushed peanut brittle – any substantial sweet candy will work.
I like to put them in a zippered plastic bag and then give them some good whacks with a rolling pin or a meat tenderizing mallet.
It actually HAS to be made ahead of time, first for the frosting to chill and second for the finished cake to firm up.
