Why we love this recipe
Now first of all, I am ALL for using pre-made ingredients when the time is right…I offer up these banana cream pie cupcakes which uses packaged cake mix AND packaged pudding, and I stand by them with all kinds of pride.
But there are some things that are so so so much better if you make them from scratch. Ricotta cheese. Applesauce. Mayonnaise. PICKLES. And all of these things are all kinds of easy to make.
But the one “staples” item I make from scratch more than any of the others is what I modestly call the best taco seasoning recipe EVER. It’s a combo of a bunch of spices I always have on hand, and it can be adjusted to anything from mild to smoke coming out of your ears spicy.
And best of all, it’s right there waiting for me whenever anyone in our multigenerational home gets a longing for tacos, which is pretty much all the time.
Spaghetti tacos, anyone? (NOT KIDDING).
Anyway, this magical combo of spices takes about 5 minutes to mix together, contains not one unpronounceable ingredient, and will be right there waiting for you the next time you get a craving for stuffed taco potatoes.

Here’s how to make this recipe
STEP 1: Mix all the spices together (adding the red pepper flakes if you want things extra spicy).
STEP 2: Keep in an airtight jar – a baby mason jar works great for this!
STEP 3: That’s all there is to it!
Recipe FAQs
Well, SAME! The basic recipe is a mild one. If you want to heat things up, add a half teaspoon (or more, if you really want some fire!) of red pepper flakes and you are all set!
You probably already have lots of them in your spice drawer right this minute! Anything that’s not already there is waiting for you in the spice aisle of your grocery store.
Like most spices, this taco seasoning combo should hang in there for months if you keep it tightly closed up in a jar. And, as with all spices, if you have any concerns about its age, give it a sniff – it should smell, well, taco-like!
Put your questions in the Comments section below and I will answer pronto!
Oh, and here’s a handy tip: this recipe makes about 6 tablespoons of taco seasoning, and your average envelope of pre-made taco seasoning contains about 2 tablespoons. So this recipe makes enough for one taco recipe and then some!
Yay, TACOS!
