This quick and elegant recipe for mustard maple tuna steaks is perfect for both weeknights and your next dinner party!
Well, we are officially on our third week in the Carolina Dream House, and in addition to getting back to my usual recipe posting schedule (hello, mustard maple tuna steaks, you delicious supper you) I’m actually also to the point where I am getting back to some of my other favorite activities.
For one thing, I was able to take my maiden voyage in my brand new soaking tub…
Side note: The Casita (otherwise known as the side of the house where the Southern husband and I live) doesn’t have its own linen closet, because I co-opted that space to make a shoe closet. PRIORITIES.
So we have had to come up with some clever ways to stow our sheets and towels, and when I finish up my post on how all our stuff got organized I will tell you more than you probably ever wanted to know about our linens.
But in the meantime, one thing we did was get that super pretty minimalist towel holder next to the tub.
I found it on one of my favorite websites, Uncommon Goods, and it is made by Phillip Stone, a woodworker and designer based out of Portland, Oregon.
He also writes songs in addition to creating beautiful wooden items, and I always love it when I can support creative and hardworking artists like Phillip.
In other news, we had our first house guest! Please meet Poseiden…
His mama was out of town for a few days, so he came to stay with us, and all I have to say about this is that he is a Very Good Boy.
I’m still missing my Dixie girl every single solitary day, but snuggling with Poseiden made me think for the first time that I could make room for another doggo in my heart.
AND, I’ve worked my way back to writing and photographing new recipes, now that I am in my new Carolina kitchen and I have pretty much figured out where all my kitchen stuff is…which brings me to today’s recipe!
Here’s how you make mustard maple tuna steaks!
Put a little a little mustard, maple syrup, a little olive oil and a little black pepper together in a small bowl and mix well with a fork.
(Another side note: when we were unpacking our kitchen I discovered that I moved four large bottles of Vermont maple syrup with me. Which should last me at least a month or two.)
Brush the mustard mixture on to both sides of a couple of thick tuna steaks. Use it all up.
Now! Pour a tablespoon of olive oil into a heavy frying pan (cast iron is perfect for this if you have one) and heat the pan over medium high heat.
Toast the breadcrumbs until they are golden brown, stirring frequently. Scoop them out and set aside.
Pour one more tablespoon of olive oil into the skillet and heat over high heat until the oil is smoking. SMOKING! I mean it.
Add the tuna steaks and sear for 1-2 minutes per side for rare to medium rare. (This is the part where the Southern husband races into the kitchen and turns our oven vent up to Extra High.)
When your gorgeous mustard maple tuna steaks are done, slice them against the grain.
Pop them on dinner plates, drizzle them with a teeny bit more maple syrup, garnish with those crispy bread crumbs and a little chopped fresh parsley and serve!
Oh, and if you need any maple syrup or a sitter for your adorable pupper, I’m right here in the almost unpacked Carolina Dream House!
