This easy recipe for fig jam and cheese bites is a super quick appetizer that is the perfect start to any dinner party – or a great snack on its own!

    fig jam and cheese bites

    Why we love this recipe

Here comes the holiday season!  And with the holiday season come holiday parties.  And with holiday parties come HORS D’OEUVRES.

And the only thing harder than figuring out how to spell hors d’ouevres is figuring out what they should be.

I’m all for a good cheese ball, but there’s nothing like coming across a new nibbles idea that is both easy AND delicious AND different.

Because after the nibbles you still have the main course, the dessert,  and the holiday cards that all still have to be done.  But never fear, I have you covered!

Ingredients you need to make this speedy appetizer

    Fig Jam Cheese Bites Ingredients
    • French Bread
    • Fig Jam
    • Brie or Camembert Cheese
    • Fresh Thyme Leaves (optional, not pictured)

Here’s how you make these cheese and fig treats!

(Scroll down for the handy complete printable recipe with nutrition info!)

Cut the French bread into thin slices and spread each slice with a little jam – I used fig jam, but peach or apricot would work just as well.

    fig spread

Slather on some soft Brie or Camembert cheese (or any other soft and spreadable cheese that you love.

Sprinkle a few leaves of chopped fresh thyme – this part is optional but adds a nice kick of herb flavor.  If you want to get REALLY fancy, grind some fresh pepper on top.

That’s it – you are done!

More tips for making this speedy appetizer recipe!

Where can I find fig jam?

Fig jam is surprisingly easy to get, especially during the holidays. If it isn’t in with the other jams in your supermarket, check by the fancy cheese counter. And if all else fails, both apricot and peach jams are great substitutes!

Can I use crackers instead of French bread for this recipe?

You can, although I love the soft texture of the French bread. If you decide on crackers, get a mild version (like water crackers) so the cheese and the jam can take center stage.

Can these be made ahead of time?

Yes, as long as you are serving them on the same day. Cover them with some plastic wrap and leave them on the counter so the cheese stays nice and melty.

    Have a question I didn’t cover?

Pop it in the Comments section below and I will get back to you pronto!

Put them on a nice platter, pour some mixed nuts into a bowl and now all you have to worry about is the next two courses.

And the holiday cards.  And the shopping.

    Ho ho ho!

This easy recipe for fig jam and cheese bites is a super quick appetizer that is the perfect start to any dinner party – or a great snack on its own!

    • Author: Kate Morgan Jackson
    • Prep Time: 15 minutes
    • Total Time: 15 minutes
    • Yield: About 25 servings
    • Category: Appetizer
    • Method: No Cook
    • Cuisine: American
    • Diet: Vegetarian

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 small loaf of French bread cut into 1/4 inch slices
    • 1 jar of fig jam (peach and apricot jam work wonderfully too!)
    • 1 wedge of Brie or Camembert cheese, room temperature
    • 1 small bunch of fresh thyme or oregano (optional!)

    Instructions

    1. Spread each bread slice with a generous spoonful of jam.  Top with a slather of cheese.
    2. Sprinkle with thyme leaves (optional!) and arrange on a pretty platter.  You’re done!

    Notes

Bread: We love a nice French baguette for this recipe, but a plain cracker like melba toast will also work just fine.

Jam: Obviously we adore fig jam best for this recipe, but peach or apricot will also taste delicious, especially if you are adding this to a summer menu.

Herbs: Freshly chopped thyme or oregano is heavenly on these cheese bites…it’s not required, but gives a little extra flavor.

They are actually at room temperature – but you can definitely do them beforehand, cover them with plastic wrap, and then pull them out a little while before folks arrive.

So you serve them cold? I like that. So many appetizers require perfect timing with the oven. How nice to be able to make something ahead and have it ready to go.

Perfection! The simplest things are often the best, and especially when you don't spend all day in the kitchen putting them together :) I'm sure your family will love these!

Lani: you know, when I was figuring this out I went back and forth on whether to toast the bread. You absolutely could toast it before you put the jam and cheese on…but I decided it would be easier to eat if they were on soft bread rounds. But either would be delicious!

Delicious! I wonder what would happen if you popped them in the oven quickly just to toast the bread? I'm guessing it would be too ooey gooey with such soft cheese… I am sure they are perfect as is and I for one will definitely be making these for Thanksgiving. Thanks!

I am deeply trying not to think about any of these things. Firstly because my mother is still insisting on cooking stuffing from a box. and I am in an uproar about it. Secondly because I have to think of something to cook for people who would rather have stuffing from a box. Sigh. Oy.

I need to get myself a baguette, some brie, and fig jam. I think that will solve all my problems.

Oh wow, those look really good! I mean really good.

Lately I've been having a lot of bread and cheese dinners. I think this would be nice to mix in! And super easy to make for appetizers. I'll definitely be keeping this recipe in mind!
