I bet you have some of my favorite cereal in your pantry Right This Minute, and while a bowl of oatmeal with warmed milk and brown sugar is all kinds of wonderful, oatmeal is super versatile for so many things.
What Is Oatmeal, Anyway?
Oatmeal is a good and good for you grain that is packed with fiber and vitamins. Rolled oats (the ones in that jolly round box) are oats that have been steamed, flattened and cut (and even with all that going on, they still count as a whole grain!).
Instant oats are cut into smaller pieces so they cook up faster. Steel cut oats are chopped instead of rolled, so they are coarser and heartier (and take longer to cook).
I tend to keep rolled oats and steel cut oats in my pantry At All Times, because you never know when that healthy oatmeal craving will strike!
