BLT Salad

By Kate Morgan Jackson

Jump to Recipe

This easy recipe for BLT salad has all the flavor of your favorite bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, along with a zingy buttermilk blue cheese dressing. Your favorite sandwich in quick and cool salad form!  Perfect for a fun summer lunch.

BLT Salad

Oh, this salad.  Not only is it full of bacon, lettuce and tomato flavor (and if you know me, you know that is hands down my favorite sandwich, because BACON) but it also is dressed with a creamy, dreamy buttermilk and blue cheese dressing that is all kinds of heaven.

So, if you want to go to salad heaven, AND you want to know what I’ve been up to since I moved from my publishing job to my all Framed Cooks all the time job, read on and let’s make it!

My first order of business was to take my mama to Taco Bell.  She had let it be known that she had never once been to Taco Bell, and the Southern daughter sweetly gave her a gift certificate to Taco Bell for Mother’s Day, and I finally had time to set up our long awaited Taco Bell lunch.

Taco Bell

Isn’t she adorable?  Doesn’t she look like she is thinking outside the bun?  We both had a Crunchwrap and an iced tea, and I’m here to tell you that everyone should go to Taco Bell every once in a while (and just for the record, the Taco Bell people have never heard of me, this is just my love for Cheesy Gordita Crunches talking).

My next order of business was to order myself these as a celebration of my new job…

Freebird Blade

…they are Freebird Blade booties, and they are One Extravagant Present from me to myself, but I knew that I would love them and I am all about the casual dress code at my new workplace.

I also had a margarita IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.

peach mint margarita

Which is completely on the up and up, because it was on the job research.  And I am here to tell you that you need to make yourself a peach mint margarita as soon as humanly possible.

And of course, I worked up this new approach to BLT salad.  What makes this version special is the dressing, which you can whisk together in about 90 seconds.

Buttermilk, mayo, blue cheese and a couple of other things, and I am here to tell you that it is not only going to take your BLT salad from good to heavenly, but any leftover dressing is a fantastic dip for chips or veggies.

We are smack in the middle of local lettuce and tomato season, and of course every season is bacon season, so now is the perfect time to whip this up as a cool and delicious summertime lunch or light supper.

Description

This easy recipe for BLT salad has all the flavor of your favorite bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, along with a zingy buttermilk blue cheese dressing. Your favorite sandwich in quick and cool salad form!

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick bacon, cooked until crisp and cut into bite size pieces
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 2 ripe tomatoes

For the dressing:

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • Dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese

Instructions

  1. Tear up lettuce and add to salad bowl. Chop tomatoes and add to bowl along with chopped bacon.
  2. Put all dressing ingredients except for blue cheese crumbles in a mixing bowl and whisk until well combined.  Stir in blue cheese.
  3. Add dressing to salad and toss. I like to add the dressing gradually and taste as I go along to make sure the salad is not “over-dressed.”
  4. Divide among plate and serve!

Notes

If you have leftover dressing, it makes a fabulous vegetable dip!

Whoops! I don’t know how that garlic snuck in there (well, yes I do – I’m writing too many recipes all at the same time!) – thanks for spotting that, Laura! It’s out now. :)

Yes, BLT in a bowl has got to be heavenly! Especially with blue cheese in the dressing! Yum! The thing I love about your recipes, Kate, is that they are so quick, easy, and customizable. I’m thinking some big, crunchy, homemade croutons would be fabulous added in. AND…it would be another food group to make this salad a complete meal. :)
