We are a little more than a week into The Kitchen Project, and I am overflowing with things to tell you…SO much has happened around here! I’m talking sheetrock. I’m talking wiring. I’m talking the arrival of appliances and cabinets. I’m talking about the fact that my stripped down to the bare walls kitchen is starting to look a little bit like Cinderella AFTER the fairy godmother arrived and not before.
But I’m getting a little ahead of myself, so let me back up. First, there was the sheetrock…
Yes, all those various large holes in the walls are now nice and covered up. There’s still a rather large hole in the middle of the floor, but my intrepid contractor has located some matching flooring, and pretty soon that hole will be gone too. I think the dog is going to miss it – she’s gotten a little attached.
The cabinets also arrived this week, in lots of boxes.
Large, large boxes. But as soon as they got there, the crew started unpacking them and putting them where they belong. I know now that cabinets around the edge of the kichen (as opposed to the island) are called perimeter cabinets. As in, the perimeter cabinets are almost all in.
Note that she is still guarding the hole in the floor.
There are also various and sundry official-looking wires all over the place.
VC? UC? Not sure. They come in different colors….
…giving the kitchen a kind of Dr. Suess look. I like it. It all means that one day soon there will be lights and dishwashers and fridges and microwaves. And a warming drawer.
I’m guessing that the electrician is going to have words with the spackling guy about this one.
Meantime, the kitchen is full of stuff like this…stuff that the Southern daughter and I could care less about, but that the Southern husband is drawn to like a bee to honey.
In other developments, the appliances arrived in their own set of largish boxes.
They are currently residing in my dining room, despite the fact that I swore a solemn oath that no part of this kitchen renovation thing would spill over into any other part of the house. It’s kind of adorable/pathetic how very innocent I was just two short weeks ago.
And speaking of appliances, the first one is IN!
That’s my stovetop hood. It still needs to have its shiny outside cover added and the protective wrapping peeled off, but it’s on its way!
I might have peeled off just a tiny piece of the covering, just to take a peek. This is a Zephyr hood, and it’s going to get plenty of use as I will soon (she said confidently) be cooking on a five burner stovetop. As in multiple pans of fried chicken on those burners. Venting will happen.
And speaking of cooking, here’s what I’ve been cooking lately with.
The stuff on the right, not my beloved Anson Mills grits and polenta that you see on the left side. The macaroni and cheese belongs to the Southern daughter. The various other Weight Watchers and Lean Cuisine stuff is mine. That leaves the giant box of corn dogs, which belongs to you-know-who.
No, not you.
I’ll be back next Tuesday with the latest update (please send me good flooring repair thoughts), and with a few recipes in the meantime!
