My cookbook giveway for July is SO MUCH FUN! I should start out by saying I am usually not a fan of cooking competitions. My friends are constantly asking me what I think of this or that television show – you know, the ones that have folks racing to make this or that, and that usually involve a stern and exasperated panel of judges? No thanks – I cook because it makes me feel happy, not to raise my blood pressure. But I’m making an exception for this fabulous book, because while it does involve a series of cooking challenges, they are done with humor and heart, and everybody wins. Especially we lucky readers who get a whole bunch of delectable recipes along with some delightfully entertaining writing.
Among the many amazing people I have been lucky enough to know, two of the most amazing are my friend Toni Markiet, and the extraordinary Maurice Sendak. So much as already been said about Maurice that I will only add that in addition to creating some of the most brilliant books the world has ever seen, he made it impossible for me to ever have a bowl of chicken soup with rice and not think about him and smile. As you may know, we lost him just about a year ago, and it’s still hard for me to believe he’s not out there, sitting at his kitchen table with his faithful German Shepherd at his feet. I asked his dear friend Toni, who knew him so very well, if she would share some of her delicious memories with us. And so in Toni’s words…
It’s the first Sunday of the month, and you know what that means…time for my Cookbook Sunday giveaway! And for the month of June, I have one that is just plain perfect for all those fresh and wonderful summer fruits and veggies and herbs that are springing up all around us. THE FRESH 20 is dedicated to the concept that yes, we really CAN be cooking delectable dinners with all those fresh, wonderful goodies from the farmer’s market, and no, it’s not going to take us a lot more time because this book has it all planned out for us. Shopping lists, menus, recipes, and tons of gorgeous pictures to show us what it’s supposed to look like. Tempting, right?
One of my favorite websites out there is called Dinner: A Love Story. I love it for the recipes of course, but I also love it for the smart and sassy writing…Jenny tells dinner like it is, with all of the happiness and hiccups. Her website is full of gorgeous pictures, recipes that you actually CAN make on ridiculously busy Tuesday night, and her writing is an easy, breezy conversation that makes you feel better about that night that yes, you did feed your family canned chili over corn chips. Because there’s always tomorrow to make her delectable recipe for spinach, tomato and feta frittata. So when I heard she had a cookbook coming out, there was pretty much no question what my May Cookbook Sunday Giveaway would be.
Today I am kicking off a new monthly feature on Framed Cooks that I am calling Cookbook Sundays. I love so many of my cookbooks so very much, and as those of you who have been reading this blog for a while know, they are my favorite things to give away to you guys. You love ’em, I love ’em, and so I thought, why not make this a regular thing? So on the first Sunday of every month I’m going to talk about one of my new faves, and then give three of them away to you so you can love them too. And I’m starting things off with a book that is technically a cookbook but is also so much more – the purely delightful RELISH by Daphne Oz.
Here comes another fun contest, everybody…but first you have to live through the story, because you KNOW there is always a story with me. Ah, barbeque.
