Oh boy, do I have a saga to go along with this recipe for bourbon brownie bites! But before I get to saga-ing, let me just say that these super-fudgy treats are packed with chocolate, walnuts, and just enough bourbon to give them a naughty little kick. Yep, these brownies are definitely not for the kiddos…you get to keep them all for yourself, because BOURBON. Ready to take everyone’s favorite chocolate treat and give them a grown-up spin? Let’s make them! But first…THE SAGA. If you have been reading this blog for even a little while, you know more than a little bit about my grits-loving, wise-cracking, ridiculously romantic Southern husband. And because Valentine’s Day is hands-down his favorite holiday, I had various great ideas for romantic dinner recipe posts that I was planning to put up this past weekend. I always try and do him proud with the Valentine’s Day posts, because he loves it so much, and it’s my way of giving it back, just a little. I usually write up the Valentine’s Day posts pretty close to the day, so I was planning to write this past one on Saturday the 13th. But then on Wednesday the 10th, THIS happened.
Okay, we are heading straight into the home stretch of Tis The Season, and one of things I am always doing this time of year is looking for the perfect combo of show-stopper and easy when it comes to that big holiday dinner dessert. You know, the one that is going to get you a round of oohs and aahs when you bring it out, and then has your dining room settle down to delirious quietness because everyone is eating in happy holiday bliss…but also the one that is not going to keep you in the kitchen for hours. Welcome to that dessert!
I’ve never been one of those people who craves Nutella. I know there are a lot of you out there, and I support your right to love and adore Nutella. I have that same relationship with bacon, and I totally understand. However, my entire position on Nutella changes when I bake it into brownies. Easy, wonderful brownies studded with walnuts and flavored with a little bit of vanilla and cinnamon. And a whole lot of Nutella, Then I am IN!

Please meet Peppermint Brownie cake, which is an easy, elegant conglomeration of brownie, meringue, chocolate, peppermint and happiness. All in one cake!
It’s a brownie! It’s a cookie! It’s a super-easy concoction made of brownie mix, a little bit of instant coffee, walnuts and a few other ingredients that come together to form something that it partly cookie, partly brownie and all the way wonderful. Let’s just say that the cookie jar was full of the these, and let’s just say that the Southern husband (who normally is not someone with a sweet tooth) made short work of these. As in, almost instantly gone. They are THAT kind of good.
I have a whole lot to say in this post. It’s going to have a happy ending full of cookie dough-topped brownies and a very special cookbook giveaway, but in the meantime I’m going to talk about small towns and hurricanes and good neighbors, and here in the beginning I’m going to say how blessed the Southern husband and I feel to live in a town where we are surrounded by the kindness of our friends, our family, our neighbors and a whole lot of people who reach out and help no matter what is swirling around us. So here I go.
